USPTO published patent application filed by Apple on June 2014, consist of self-healing elastomer which could be led to the making new iPhones with waterproof, weatherproof, dustproof body. As the file has been applied early, we may expect that waterproof iPhone will come recently - could be iPhone 7.
The patent is named as "Electronic device with hidden connector" which is an elastomer, a type of rubber which can lose and regain its shape by stretching. As example, consider USB port sealed with the elastomer, when USB cable/device is pushed into the port, the seal would open up to allow the plug to be inserted into the port. Once the plug is removed, the rubber reverts back to its original shape and protects the port by covering it.
Apple had already owned the patent for this technology, that is why iPhone 6s and 6s Plus could withstand in water, even they are not water resistant.
We can expect that, the next water proof iPhone will come soon, may be iPhone 7.
