Google tests smartphones instead of passwords for Google accounts

Google is testing a new facility which allows users to login their google accounts without password, but through their own smartphones. The new feature wasn't published officially, it was unveilled by a Reddit user rp1226, who has been invited to google for tsting the programme.

For sign in using smartphone, you must sync up your own device (must be compatible) tyo the account and verify the attempt by entering the number displayed on the smartphone to the device that had already been logged in (PC, Mac, etc.) .

But, there may be some attempts to conquer the account while losting phone and similar situations, Google suggests to protect the device with an ID or biometric/touch ID protection.

The reddit user says that :
I just added screenshots of how it works.
You authorize your phone to allow you to log into your account.
You go into a computer and type in your email. Then you get a message on your phone to allow the login. If you hit yes, the computer logs into your Google account without a password.
EDIT: added one more screenshot of how it looks from the computer.
EDIT 2: Here are the slides with pictures of the steps
Here are the steps. I used a VM with IE to test this out. Take a look below.
  1. Go to google.com to test out the log in. (granted that i'm not logged in.)
  2. Enter in email address into sign in page and hit next.
  3. Next page tells you to check your phone and enter the challenge. (I had tried this this morning and it didn't ask me to enter a challenge. But as I was going through the process this time, I was had a challenge.)
  4. On the phone I get a notification "Trying to sign in?"
  5. Opening the notification I'm asked if i'm trying to sign in from another computer. I answer yes.
  6. Next I have to enter the challenge. In this case the number on the screen is 21.
  7. Now on my computer, I'm logged into the google page.

It is not clear about the 'COMPATIBLE DEVICES' . It may be only some Nexus devices, 'cause they're directly maintained by Google. But Android Police says that they are not going to replace the passwords with smartphones, they're only adding this as an extra security feature to google accounts.
